The Jets are going to interview USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury for their vacant head coaching job according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
Team sources familiar with the head coaching searches of the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets told Yahoo Sports both franchises are expected to conduct formal interviews with Kingsbury for their openings.
I don’t mind casting a wide net. There’s no harm in interviewing Kingsbury.
With that said, this is a very odd candidate. Kingsbury was just fired by Texas Tech after posting a 35-40 record in six seasons. Are the Jets really going to look to a recently fired Big XII coach with a losing record?
His offenses at Texas Tech were prolific, and I think he’d be an outstanding offensive coordinator candidate. Maybe the Jets are laying the groundwork for something like that.
In case you were wondering, he was just hired as USC’s coordinator in December so he did not work with Sam Darnold in college.
Kingsbury had a brief stint during his playing career with the Jets. The team signed him in 2005 after starting quarterback Chad Pennington and backup quarterback Jay Fiedler suffered season-ending injuries.
