According to Manish Mehta, everyone’s favorite New York Jets beat writer, the Jets made no claims from the NFL waiver wire this weekend.
If true, this is stunning news. On a roster still very much in rebuilding mode, with holes at nearly every position other than perhaps the wide receivers, the quarterback, and the secondary, the Jets apparently felt so good about the roster they couldn’t find a single player placed on waivers from any of the 31 other NFL teams that would represent an upgrade over the players currently on the team. Is this an act of hubris? Negligence? Incompetence? I don’t know, but it certainly is not the direction many would have gone in.
Much too much time and attention is spent on this Scrub Fest weekend. In the end the likelihood of any player picked up on waivers ever developing into an impact player is very low. Nonetheless, it is incumbent on the general manager and his staff to at least give it a try on a team devoid of talent among the backup offensive linemen and rush linebackers, among other positions.
What do you think? Do you think there were players available on waivers that could have helped the Jets? Is this much ado about nothing, or are you displeased at this development? Let us know how you feel, and what players, if any, could have been useful waiver wire pickups, in the comments.
