The New York Jets have signed defensive lineman Kendall Reyes and waived/injured recent signing Shaneil Jenkins to make room on the roster.
Kendall Reyes is a 6’ 4”, 300 pound defensive lineman out of the University of Connecticut. He will turn 29 years old in September. Reyes was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers (now the Los Angeles Chargers) with the 49th overall selection in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL draft.
In five NFL seasons Kendall Reyes has accumulated 149 tackles and 14.5 sacks. His best years were his first two years in the NFL, when he racked up a total of 10.5 sacks and 65 tackles. After the 2016 season Reyes was not signed as a free agent by any team and he was out of the league for the 2017 season.
With Kendall Reyes already having missed a week of practices and with a fairly deep rotation of defensive linemen already on the roster, it would seem Reyes is a long shot to make the team. However, if Reyes is able to recapture the pass rushing ability he flashed early in his career perhaps he has a chance to carve out a role on a Jets defense starved for pass rushers.
