New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles gave some important updates today regarding the injury status of a couple of key players. According to Bowles Jets running back Elijah McGuire will not be ready for the season opener on September 10, and he may be a candidate for short term injured reserve designated for return. In addition, Bowles disclosed that the severity of Jets wide receiver Jermaine Kearse’s abdominal injury is unknown at this time, and his timetable for return is uncertain.
The possibility of Elijah McGuire missing significant time opens up possibilities for Trenton Cannon and Charcandrick West on the Jets running back depth chart. It is possible both will make the 53 man roster, and one of them may be in for significant playing time as a change of pace back.
If Jermaine Kearse were to miss significant time with his abdominal injury that would likely open a window of opportunity for Terrelle Pryor to make a case for the third wide receiver spot. With four receivers relatively close in ability, the absence of any one will potentially allow another an opportunity to excel and potentially displace the absentee guy on what could be a fairly fluid depth chart this season.
