The New York Jets have signed rookie quarterback John Wolford and waived/injured returner/wide receiver Lucky Whitehead.
John Wolford is a 6’ 0”, 200 pound quarterback out of Wake Forest University. He spent time with the Jets this year as a tryout player in rookie minicamp. Wolford was a four year starter at Wake Forest, where he threw for 8794 yards, 59 touchdowns and 41 interceptions, while completing 59.7% of his passes. Wolford also ran for 19 touchdowns. He led the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to Bowl victories in 2016 and 2017. Realistically Wolford has little chance to make the Jets roster. He appears to be here for the sole purpose of eating snaps in the final preseason game. Perhaps if he impresses he might find a spot on the practice squad.
The waiving of Whitehead appears to cement wide receiver Andre Roberts’ roster spot as a return specialist. With Whitehead gone and Trenton Cannon struggling badly in holding onto the football, Roberts appears to be the only viable option left as a returner. Welcome to the Jets, Andre Roberts. That is, at least until and unless the Jets sign a returner from the many cut players on cutdown day.
