Jets waive Cairo Santos

Divisional Round - Pittsburgh Steelers v Kansas City Chiefs Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images

Cairo Santos entered training camp as the prohibitive favorite to win the placekicking job for the Jets. However, an undisclosed injury has kept him out of practices and preseason games for weeks. Today the Jets waived the kicker.

That is a bit of a confusing explanation since he is finally healthy enough for the Jets to see and they just acquired another kicker in Jason Myers who they haven’t seen. One might wonder whether there were other factors behind the scenes that led to this decision. The Jets couldn’t let Santos go while injured unless the two sides came to an injury settlement. It seems like the team might have been looking to make this move for a while and only now is getting the opportunity to do so.

In any event, Taylor Bertolet and Myers are the two kickers currently under contract for the Jets. The team might be watching the waiver wire over the next few weeks.
