Football Outsiders likes the Jets secondary

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Football Outsiders has released its 2018 Almanac. The book is a comprehensive preview of all things football related this year. It is available in the Football Outsiders store.

Rivers McCown wrote the Jets chapter. He is answering a question about the Jets each day this week.

Today’s question deals with the secondary, specifically the impact of Trumaine Johnson. Johnson was the Jets’ splash signing during the offseason.

How much will the addition of Trumaine Johnson help the defense?

I’m most optimistic about the Jets secondary compared to any other unit on their team, and it starts with reeling in Johnson. Johnson is an excellent press-man corner, fits exactly the type of style that Todd Bowles has played, and will be a difference-maker in the secondary. Morris Claiborne is a solid stopgap when healthy, and Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye should form a terrific safety tandem.

Specifically on Johnson, I think he’ll have a cascade effect by covering No. 1s -- everybody else in the cornerback group can spend more time on assignments they are more suited to play against.

Sounds good. Now all we need to do is find this secondary a better nickname.
