Trumaine Johnson misses practice with a hamstring strain

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets returned to practice today after their second preseason game. They did so without their number one cornerback, Trumaine Johnson. Head coach Todd Bowles revealed that Johnson suffered a hamstring strain in Thursday’s game against the Washington Redskins.

On did Trumaine Johnson pull a hamstring during the game and is that why you held him out of practice...

He strained it. We just held him out for precaution.

On if Johnson should be back soon...

Hopefully.

Johnson is one of the most important players on the team. Without a proven pass rusher, the Jets will depend on their coverage to shut down opposing passing attacks, and the Jets paid Johnson big money in free agency to handle the other team’s best receiver.

Still weeks away from the start of the regular season, Johnson has plenty of time to mend. The Jets have wisely been cautious with injuries during the preseason, sitting players in games who were healthy enough to practice during the week. There is nothing at stake in preseason games so it is smart to sit banged up players, even if they would be capable of suiting up in a regular season game. This makes me believe there is a possibility we have seen the last of Johnson until Week 1.
