Jets 2018 Roster Countdown: Number 68 Kelvin Beachum

NFL: New York Jets at New Orleans Saints Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Our Jets roster countdown now moves on to Kelvin Beachum.

Name: Kelvin Beachum

Number: 68

Year with Jets: 2nd

Projected Role: Starting left tackle

His 2017: After a single season in Jacksonville, the Jaguars declined his contract option. The Jets pounced, signing the left tackle following the departure of Ryan Clady. Beachum provided the Jets with credible if unspectacular play at the cornerstone position. PFF had him responsible for 4 sacks and 29 total disruptions, an above average total. His run blocking was a pretty big liability, though. Ultimately you can live with suspect run blocking from a left tackle as long as he is doing a quality job protecting the quarterback’s blind side. Beachum did just that in 2017.

2018 will be a success if: Beachum can continue to hold the fort at left tackle. With so much invested in Sam Darnold, the Jets are going to need to invest in a premium player at this position sooner rather than later to protect their prized asset. Beachum can at least provide the team with a bridge to the future and prevent Darnold from facing too much danger in the mean time.

Odds of making the roster: Beachum will be starting on opening day as long as he is healthy. He is a Lock (>99%).
