NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Rontez Miles underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus. According to a source, the procedure is expected to shelve the veteran backstop for three to four months.
Rapoport was told Miles remains a candidate for IR recall.
Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye are the starting safeties for the Jets so this will not likely have an enormous impact. Losing Miles is a bit of a hit to depth. He also has developed into a quality special teamer.
We found out yesterday that the Jets are signing free agent safety J.J. Wilcox. One would presume Miles’ injury has something to do with that. The timeframe Rapoport outlines suggests Rontez will miss at least the early part of the regular season.
Miles has been in training camp every year with the Jets since 2013, when they signed him as an undrafted free agent.
