Jets 2018 Roster Countdown: Number 82 Lucky Whitehead

New, comments
NFL: Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Our Jets roster countdown now moves on to Lucky Whitehead.

Name: Lucky Whitehead

Number: 82

Year with Jets: 2nd

Projected Role: Competing for returner job

His 2017: Whitehead’s 2017 campaign might have been the most bizarre for any player in the NFL. The Cowboys waived him after reports surfaced that Whitehead was charged with petty larceny in Virginia. There was a small problem with the Cowboys’ decision. It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. Whitehead actually wasn’t involved in the alleged incident. The person arrested in Virginia falsely identified himself as Whitehead to the authorities.

The Jets ended up claiming Whitehead off waivers. He didn’t play in 2017, however. He broke his foot in a training camp practice. Whitehead was waived with an injury designation and went to injured reserve at the end of the preseason. After he recovered, the team waived him. He was re-signed to the practice squad a few months later and called up to the active roster shortly before the end of the season.

2018 will be a success if: Whitehead wins the kickoff and punt return jobs and provides the Jets with a quality performance in those spots. The team could certainly use an upgrade.

Odds of making the roster: At only 5’9” Whitehead probably would be a slot specialist if he got a chance at wide receiver. I don’t see him getting much playing time there, though. The Jets have too many receivers with more upside on the team. With that in mind, I think Whitehead is purely competing for a return job. He is in a crowded competition so I call him a Longshot (less than 25%).
