Our Jets roster countdown now takes a look at Neal Sterling.
Name: Neal Sterling
Year with Jets: 2nd
Projected Role: Competing for a tight end roster spot
His 2017: Sterling bounced around the NFL in 2017. He spent training camp in Jacksonville but failed to make the team. A short stint with the Jets followed. Then he was waived and joined the Chiefs practice squad only to return to the Jets roster. He saw his most extensive playing time in the season finale against New England and posted 5 catches for 74 yards, the most productive receiving game a Jets tight end had in 2017.
2018 will be a success if: Sterling can become a contributor as a receiving threat at tight end for the Jets. They certainly could use one.
Odds of making the roster: Sterling was reportedly one of the standouts of the offseason program. That combined with that performance against the Patriots in his only extended action offers some small rationale for optimism. He certainly will have an opportunity considering how wide open tight end is for the Jets.
I don’t think anything would shock me with Sterling. I’d believe it if you told me he is going to be the Week 1 starter. I’d believe it if you told me he was going to be cut in training camp. He’d probably be my choice if you asked me to guess a player nobody knows who will contribute to the Jets in 2018. With that said, I still can’t put a player with his resume better than 50/50.
