Our countdown of the 2018 Jets roster now takes a look at Clive Walford.
Name: Clive Walford
Year with Jets: 1st
Projected Role: Possible starting tight end
His 2017: Walford saw his playing time greatly reduced after the Raiders signed Jared Cook in the offseason. He posted career lows of 9 catches for 80 yards. The Raiders waived him in the offseason, and the tight end needy Jets claimed him.
2018 will be a success if: Walford prevents the tight end position from being a total black hole. He is the only player at the position with even a modest track record catching passes in the NFL. Walford hauled in 28 receptions for 359 yards in 2015 and 33 for 329 in 2016. This isn’t exactly stellar production, but it is in the range of what the team got from Austin Seferian-Jenkins a year ago. ASJ was at least a credible target. The Jets probably can’t expect more than that from their 2018 tight ends.
Odds of making the roster: The Jets have a lot of tight ends with theoretical upside, but Walford is the only player who has done anything as a receiver in the NFL. There is a chance one of the upside guys breaks out in training camp, but I will call him Probable (75-99%).
