Jets 2018 Roster Countdown: Number 88 Charles Johnson

New, comments
NFL: Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Our Jets roster countdown now looks at Charles Johnson.

Name: Charles Johnson

Number: 88

Year with Jets: 1st

Projected Role: Competing for wide receiver roster spot

His 2017: Johnson spent the season on injured reserve for the Panthers after suffering an offseason knee injury.

2018 will be a success if: Johnson turns into some sort of a contributor. The bar has to be pretty low for a guy in his fifth NFL organization in six years.

Odds of making the roster: I struggle to come up with a scenario where Johnson is on the final 53 man roster for the Jets. At 29 years old, he isn’t a young prospect with upside. With only 60 career receptions, he doesn’t have much of a track record of success in the league. He doesn’t return kicks so there is no path to the roster that way. The Jets have a lot of other receivers on the roster, and every single one of them has a better record of NFL production and/or more upside. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Johnson be cut the next time the Jets sign a player because I just don’t see any reason to bring him to training camp. That makes him a Longshot (less than 25%).
