Our Jets roster countdown continues with a look at Deon Simon.
Name: Deon Simon
Year with Jets: 4th
Projected Role: Camp body competing for backup defensive lineman roster spot.
His 2017: Simon failed to make the roster out of training camp and was signed to the practice squad. He spent most of the season there before being signed to the active roster right before the final game of the season.
2018 will be a success if: Simon turns into a quality rotational defensive lineman. It is likely now or never. He is out of practice squad eligibility so he will have to make the 53 man roster to stay with the Jets. He will also be 28 by the time the season starts so he isn’t that young either.
Odds of making the roster: People have had high hopes for Simon the last few years. He has been hyped by people such as Mike Maccagnan’s mentor, Charley Casserly. After three years of opportunities, however, Simon has yet to carve out a role. If he hasn’t done it yet, I don’t see much of a reason to believe he will now. The Jets drafted two defensive linemen this year. The team is presumably higher on them. Simon will likely need to vastly outperform his competition to earn a spot. I deem that a Longshot (less than 25%).
