That was fast: The #Raiders have waived QB Christian Hackenberg, per the NFL’s transaction wire. That negates a trade from earlier this offseason. Oakland keeps its 7th round pick.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) June 12, 2018
The Jets had sent Hackenberg to the Raiders a few weeks back for a conditional seventh round pick. The conditions for the pick were built around Hackenberg sticking on Oakland’s roster for a certain period of time into the regular season. Since that did not happen, the Jets now receive no compensation from the deal.
I think it is difficult to be disappointed because the odds of Hackenberg sticking on that team always felt long to me. The deal gave the Raiders a free look at the former Penn State quarterback, but their coaches have eyes. Hackenberg just doesn’t look like NFL material. There aren’t many skills to work with.
In the end, the Jets got literally nothing for the second round pick they invested in Hackenberg in 2016. He never played a down for them, and they got nothing for trading him. They might as well have lit that pick on fire.
