Looking for a New Flight Connections Pilot

As you probably saw, our dear friend David Vill is stepping away from our daily Flight Connections links post. I think I speak for all of us when I say we will miss him. There will be time to say thank you to David and give him a proper sendoff when we get closer to his official departure date.

Before that time comes, we have the matter of finding somebody new to handle the daily links on this website. It has become one of the most important features of Gang Green Nation. Every few months somebody gets mad about something I have written or some comment moderation decision, and I inevitably get an e-mail that says something like, “You stink. The only reason anybody comes to this site is for Flight Connections.” Even when somebody has nothing good to say about me, they have nothing bad to say about Flight Connections.

Over the last eight and a half years, David has made it look easy. But what he did isn’t easy. Jets fans on GGN want to be able to read all of the interesting stories about the team each and every morning.

What are you looking for?

One of the best parts of running this site is that for the last eight and a half years has been that I never had to worry about our daily links post. I knew it would be up every morning. So ideally I’d want somebody reliable. I don’t want to have to constantly nudge somebody because they forgot.

I’m not saying you have to be here 365 days a year with no exceptions. There might be a day or two here or there where work is just kicking your tail. You might be going on vacation for a week or two. But I want somebody who actually has the time to get links up almost every morning on a consistent basis. You don’t need to live in the Eastern Time Zone, but we will want to have the post up early in the morning each day Eastern Time. That is where our target audience lives.

I’m not sure how easy it will be to find somebody seven days a week. We might need to split it up and have something like a Monday-Thursday person and a Friday-Sunday person. I’d ask at the very least that you be able to commit to three days in a week.

I’d also want somebody with a passion to contribute to the site and get Jets fans the information they want on a daily basis. Through the years, I have found that a lot of people out there like the idea of contributing to a site like this, but maybe don’t love it so much once the rubber actually hits the road. I don’t say that to judge anybody. It isn’t easy to come up with contributions consistently. And it isn’t easy to keep a passion to do this over a long time. For every Smackdad and Michael Nania who takes a spot here and runs with it, we go through like ten people who take GGN for a test drive and realize it isn’t for them. That’s totally understandable. I’m not expecting to be lucky enough to have the next person for eight and a half years. With that said, I also don’t want to have to fill this job again in three months. So to the extent you can prove that you will be committed to the job for the long haul, it will be a plus.

And don’t be a jerk. I don’t want somebody making comments here or on Twitter doing stuff that would make it embarrassing for this site to be associated with that person.

How do I apply?

If you’ve read all that, want to find a way to contribute to the site, and have the passion to produce, send me an e-mail before 6:00 p.m. Eastern this Thursday May 10. Make the subject “GGN Flight Connections Opening”. In the body of the e-mail explain your credentials, why you want to take over Flight Connections, and why you have the passion to do the job well. Attached resume is optional.
