The New York Jets have signed free agent inside linebacker Kevin Minter and free agent wide receiver Charles Johnson.
Kevin Minter is a 27 year old, 6’ 0”, 246 pound linebacker originally drafted out of LSU in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Minter played the first four years of his career in Arizona before leaving in free agency to play for the Cincinnati Bengals. Minter’s best two years came in 2015 and 2016, when he started all 32 games for the Cardinals. Minter has started a total of 44 games in his NFL career and in five seasons he has racked up 256 tackles, 5 sacks and 6 passes defended. Minter missed almost half the season in 2017 with elbow and hamstring injuries. He spent the last few weeks of the 2017 season on injured reserve.
Charles Johnson is a 29 year old, 6’ 2”, 215 pound wide receiver originally drafted out of Grand Valley State by the Green Bay Packers in the 7th round of the 2013 NFL draft. Johnson was not invited to the NFL Combine but posted some impressive numbers at his Pro Day. He ran a 4.38 forty yard dash, had a 39.5” vertical jump and a 11’ 1” broad jump.
Johnson never played for the Packers but was picked up by the Cleveland Browns off of the Packers’ practice squad in 2013. Johnson was placed on injured reserve shortly thereafter by the Browns, and was cut the next season just before the season started. The Minnesota Vikings picked up Johnson and he had his best year with them his first year in the NFL, with 31 receptions for 475 yards and two touchdowns. During his three year career with the Vikings Johnson amassed a total of 60 receptions for 834 yards and two touchdowns.
Charles Johnson left the Vikings in free agency in 2017 and was signed by the Carolina Panthers, but he spent the entire 2017 season on injured reserve after season ending knee surgery.
