Ian Rapoport reports the Jets have made a trade with the Indianapolis Colts to acquire the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The 49th pick belonged to the Jets from the Sheldon Richardson trade. The other picks belonged to the Jets originally.

At the risk of stating the obvious, this probably tells us two things.

  1. The Jets believe there are three franchise level quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft.
  2. The Jets are taking a quarterback.

This might not look like a great move if you are judging it solely on the basis of one of the Draft value charts, but those are almost irrelevant in this case. The rewards of the prize trump any points system. (And quite frankly I am pleasantly surprised it didn’t require a 2019 first round pick given the stakes.)

Ultimately three second round picks would be a tiny price to pay if the Jets can actually land a long-term solution at the quarterback position. Now comes the small matter of picking the right quarterback.
