According to multiple sources former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum will sign with the Denver Broncos in free agency. The 29 year old Keenum, after a pedestrian career mostly in a backup role, got his chance with the Vikings in 2017 and played well, going 11-3 as a starter with a 98 passer rating and leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game.
Denver signing Keenum has repercussions for the New York Jets. The Broncos were rumored to be one of the leading contenders for free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins; that is no longer a realistic possibility. That leaves the Vikings, the Jets and the Cardinals as the leading candidates for Cousins’ services.
Keenum’s signing may also have implications for the NFL draft. While it seems unlikely Keenum completely rules out Denver staying put with their current pick #5 and taking a quarterback, it does make that option less likely. The possibility of Denver selecting another position at #5, or trading down, becomes a bit more likely with the Keenum signing.
