AGOP: Snatchin' Souls

Initial Cap Space: $89,879,171.00

(The Obvious) Cuts:

Jeremy Kerley: Savings of 1,033,332

Ben Ijalana: Savings of 4,750,000

  • I have doubts that either one of these needs explaining.

Updated Cap Space: $95,662,503.00

Internal Signings:

Demario Davis: 3 years, 20 million (12 guaranteed, First year cap hit of 8 million)

Morris Claiborne: 4 years, 32 million (18 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 8 million)

Josh McCown: 1 year, 10 million (8 million guarantted, First year cap hit of 8 million)

Eric Tomlinson: 3 years, 6.5 million (3 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 2 million)

Terrance Brooks: 2 years, 3 million (1 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 1 million)

Dokota Dozier: 3 years, 4.5 million (3 million guarantted, First year cap hit of 1.5 million)

Mike Pennel: 3 years, 8 million (5 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 2.25 million)

2nd Round Tender for Quincy Enunwa at 2.96 million

  • Davis and Claiborne are brought back to keep some continuity on the back end and because they both had pretty good seasons. Ideally Claiborne will get some extra help in the cornerback room, but we'll get to that later.
  • McCown was brought back because he's an ideal stopgap given his performance last year and his current career stage (read: Old & on the verge of retirement)
  • Tomlinson was brought back because he's a superb blocker and is a perfect compliment to Quincy Enunwa, who will be moving back to h-back.
  • The others are simply good depth.

Updated Cap Space: $60,912,503.00

TRADE:

Jets trade 2018 5th round pick and 2019 7th round pick for Steelers Wideout Martavis Bryant.

Extension given at 4 years, 32 million (16 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 8 million)

  • Given the current influx of trades leading up the deadline I wanted to get involved. Martavis is a nice compliment opposite Robby that will stress the defense and warrant a bunch of 2 high coverages. This should allow Kearse and Enunwa to destroy defenses underneath while opening up some running lanes.

Updated Cap Space: $52,912,503.00

External Signings:

Andrew Norwell: 6 years, 75 million (40 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 15 million)

Sheldon Richardson: 4 years, 46 million (23 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 14 million)

Ryan Jensen: 4 years, 38 million (20 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 10 million)

Trent Murphy: 1 year, 4 million (4 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 4 million)

Alex Okafor: 1 year, 3 million (3 million guaranteed, First year cap hit of 3 million)

  • Andrew Norwell is the best free agent on the market and by FAR the safest. His pass blocking efficiency was absurd as he allowed no sacks and only 13 pressures. He's one of the few all pros to hit FA in recent memory and he's worth a top 5 guard contract
  • Ryan Jensen is the safest center on the market. While he doesn't have the "Wow" factor of Richburg, he's been steadily improving and his pass blocking was also extremely good with a PFF grade of 98.4 in pass protection this season. Him and Norwell will do wonders for whatever QB winds up behind center
  • Sheldon Richardson: Here is where I lose the room, but before you slam the door and run screaming into the night hear me out. He's the best dlineman on the market when it comes to run defense. He's also a pretty good pass rusher despite the lack of sacks. According to PFF, he ranked ninth of QB pressures, which will help the back end as passes come out sooner than desired and Leo as he draws less attention.
  • Trent Murphy and Alex Okafor are going to get "show me" contracts and will be allowed to compete for the starting EDGE spots. Ideally one of them returns to form, but if both do the front 4 of Murphy (9 sacks in 2016), Okafor (8 sacks in 2014), Leo, & Sheldon can be quite formidable

Updated Cap Space: $8,912,503.00

Draft:

Round 1: Minkah Fitzpatrick (Moneyback, Alabama)

  • Best player in the class and with the new base defense being a nickel he's position versatility is extremely valuable. Him, Adams, and Maye can be mixed and matched to create confusion and allow for blitz schmes that most teams only can dream of

Round 2: Mason Rudolph (Quarterback, OK State)

  • Mason is arguably the best deep ball thrower in the class and him throwing to Martavis, Robby, Quincy, and Kearse could be explosive. I also think that the interior oline of Norwell, Jensen, and (a hopefully returning to form) Winters will give him ample time in the pocket as interior pressure almost never arrives

Round 2 (Seattle): Jaire Alexander (Boundary Corner, Louisville)

  • If not for the injury this year he's going round 1 and he's probably going high. I'll happily take the gamble to pair him with Adams, Maye, Minkah, & Claiborne in what could be a new look "No fly zone"

Round 3: Rashaad Penny (Running back, SD State)

  • He's my favorite back in the class. That's the logic behind this pick. I also think he'll thrive in a spread RPO offense that routinely faces 2 high safeties due to the Robby-Martavis combo

Round 4: Shaquem Griffin (EDGE, UCF)

  • What if I told you that you could get a highly productive defender with high character and athleticism and a wicked first step and counter in round 4; would that be something you might be interested in? Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised if he winds up as a starting edge and at the minimum he's going to be a top tier special teamer

Round 5: Traded to Pittsburg

Round 6: Dmitri Flowers (FB, Oklahoma)

  • Remember Tony Richardson? Flowers is the top run blocking FB in the draft and hopefully can have a similar impact

Round 7: Kentavius Street (Dline, NC State)

  • Depth dlineman. Maybe he pans out, maybe he doesn't

Post Draft/FA Cuts:

Buster Skrine: Savings of 6,000,000

James Carpenter: Savings of 4,700,000

No reason for either one of those guys given the Minkah selection or the Norwell signing. Adios, old friends.

Summary:

So what did I mean by snatchin' souls? What I meant is that my goal was to create positions strengths that would be so intimidating that the other unit would know what to expect and still not be able to stop it. For example, I can tell you that it's a pass and you still wouldn't generate pressure in the interior with Norwell, Jensen, and Winters (pending a Winters resurgence). I could also tell you that it's an RPO, but do you really have the team to stop the combined athleticism of Martavis, Robby, & Enunwa? And if you can do you really have the personnel to stop Penny against a light box?

And as an opposing offense, do you really want to face this defense? You could throw if you want, but where do you throw it if Alexander hits? Further, how do you account for the number of plus blitzers on this team in Maye, Adams, Minkah, Lee, and Davis? And with Leo, Shelly, and Davis on the inside do you really want to run the ball inside? With Minkah and Adams outside do you really want to run outside?

Basically, I built this team with the intention to snatch the other team's souls and motivation by game's end. To create a Jets team that worries other teams and that other teams start gameplanning for a week or two before the game. A team that can tell you what play they're running and STILL win that play. AGOP: Snatchin' souls.
