Mike Maccagnan keeps his job; will “work closely” with ownership on coaching search

The Jets announced the firing of head coach Todd Bowles on Sunday night. The team’s statement posted on Twitter curiously lacked any mention of Mike Maccagnan.

Well, the general manager is staying according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

I’d say I’m disappointed, but I’m not surprised.

Most media reports suggested Maccagnan was going to get another chance.

And this is not my first Jets rodeo. I’ve been on this site for over a decade and following this team for 25 years. The Jets doing something really stupid isn’t going to shock me.

Make no mistake. This is a really stupid move. We’ve already laid out how poorly Maccagnan has performed in practically every important aspect of his job. For now we won’t even touch on how this might negatively impact the coaching search or complicate things by putting the general manager and head coach on different timelines.

My preliminary analysis is that the Jets have loser owners, and this is a Mickey Mouse operation.

I’ll probably need a night of sleep to put together some deeper thoughts tomorrow.
