Sam Darnold Likely Out Sunday With Strained Foot, Week To Week Going Forward

NFL: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold strained his foot in last Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, is in a walking boot, and will likely miss this Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. This, according to multiple reports.

Darnold’s injury has been characterized as significant by some reports and his status for the game against the New England Patriots after the bye may be in question. Going forward, Darnold’s status is being labeled week to week.

In Darnold’s absence veteran quarterback Josh McCown will presumably take the reins. Expect quarterback Davis Webb to be promoted from the practice squad to serve as the backup, unless the Jets make a move to sign a veteran.

Darnold has started all nine games so far this season and has a 55.0 completion percentage, throwing for 1,934 yards, 11 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a 63.3 passer rating. The Jets are 3-6 with Darnold under center, but rank ahead of the 2-7 Bills in the AFC East standings.
