The New York Jets have claimed former Indianapolis Colts DE/OLB Tarell Basham off of waivers. The Colts waived Basham after a little more than one year with the team.
Tarell Basham is a 24 year old, 6’ 4”, 265 pound edge rusher out of Ohio University. Basham was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts with the 80th overall selection in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. Basham struggled to establish himself with the Colts defense. In 16 career games with the Colts Basham racked up seven tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble, all in his rookie year. Basham only played in one game with the Colts in 2018 before being waived.
Tarell Basham has prototypical height, weight and arm length as well as good speed for an NFL edge rusher, but he is somewhat stiff, lacks bend around the edge, and does not have great burst. He is a high motor player who may not have the athletic chops to develop into an impact edge rusher.
To make room for Basham on the 53 man roster the Jets waived recently promoted defensive end Bronson Kaufusi. Kaufusi was promoted earlier in the week, and never got a chance to make the active roster for a game. The Jets also waived wide receiver ArDarius Stewart with an injury settlement.
