Monday Night Football, Week 7. Tonight the New York Giants travel to Georgia to take on the Atlanta Falcons in a matchup of last place NFC teams. Call this one the Disappointment Bowl. Or the Toilet Bowl.
These two teams had high hopes coming into the season. The Giants had rebuilt their offensive line, and with the addition of rookie sensation Saquon Barkley to a group of offensive weapons that already included Odell Beckham, Jr. and Evan Engram, they had reason to believe they would field one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL. The Falcons were coming off a playoff berth in 2017 and were only two years removed from a Super Bowl appearance. These two teams dreamed of grand things in 2018. Instead they have each sunk to new depths, and the only thing either team is likely to be playing for towards the end of the season is draft position.
Still, there are things that make this matchup watchable, perhaps even compelling. The Giants do have an outstanding group of weapons, if only the Giants offensive line could block and Eli Manning could take advantage of his weapons. And the Falcons do feature quarterback Matt Ryan having one of the best years of his standout career, and Julio Jones, one of the best wide receivers in the game. The Giants and Falcons both field defenses ranked in the bottom quarter of the league in points allowed, so perhaps we could be in for a shootout in Atlanta tonight.
It’s the Giants and the Falcons in a battle of NFC cellar dwellers on Monday Night Football.
Enjoy the game everybody.
