NY Jets Podcast: The Flaws of Drafting Solely on Need

It is a busy time of the year for football. In unserious football developments, the Pro Bowl took place over the weekend, and the XFL did not fold.

In more serious news, we turn the page to Super Bowl week as the Patriots and Eagles will meet with the Lombardi Trophy on the line. The Senior Bowl also took place over the weekend as the top prospects competed in Mobile, Alabama. Some argue the practices in the leadup to the game are just as if not more important than the game itself for evaluation purposes.

This seems like a good time to talk about the Draft. On today’s podcast we look at the Draft. Rather than discuss individual prospects, today we talk about philosophies for picking players. It seems this time of year many members of the media and fans have one piece of criteria for a good Draft pick, whether a player plays a position where the team is currently weak. Today we talk about some of the reasons this viewpoint can be problematic.
