The Jets decided to make another coordinator change last week, firing John Morton. A preliminary report suggests quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates is likely to replace Morton in 2018.

This is the third time Todd Bowles has changed a coordinator. Two offensive coordinators have been let go in his tenure, Chan Gailey and Morton, along with one special teams coordinator, Bobby April.

The one coordinator who has stayed through the entire Bowles tenure is Kacy Rodgers. Rodgers has helped Bowles run his defense to the chagrin of many fans.

Rodgers’ presence suggests Bowles wants to keep an active hand in the defense the Jets run. The head coach’s fingerprints have on a lot of what the Jets have done schematically over the last three years even if Rodgers has the title of coordinator.

On today’s podcast we look at whether Bowles would be better-served taking a step back from running his unit as many successful head coaches do or whether he is right to play an active role as many successful head coaches also do.
