Jets CEO Christopher Johnson addressed the media on Tuesday. He made his first public comments on the extensions the Jets gave general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles last week.
Johnson explained the rationale for the decision.
“There was just something happening on this team that convinced me that we were going in the right direction,” he said. “I think that they are both really good men and there’s an added part about wanting to have some stability on this team. You want to have the same coach working with the same players over the years. You don’t want to keep switching up systems on people, but that was a small aspect of it.”
In the past, Jets ownership has spoken about the need for patience but frequently changed its tune once losses started piling up. In this case, the man in charge kept his word about the season not being judged solely on wins and losses.
We will see whether it pays dividends for the team in the weeks and months ahead.
