The Jets brought back wide receiver Jeremy Kerley earlier this week. The veteran wide receiver had been let go by the San Francisco 49ers. Kerley’s return is a relative surprise since he had a messy departure from the team a year ago. Brian Costello notes that Kerley actually called the Jets to try and arrange a return before the Jets called him.
“I didn’t want to be nowhere else,” Kerley said. “This was the place I felt most comfortable with. As soon as I got released, I was on the phone myself, trying to hit up Todd and let him know I’m trying to come back over here. As soon it happened, I was on my phone, looking for every Jet contact I had. I was trying to hit up everybody.”
Making things easier is Chan Gailey’s departure. Gailey phased Kerley out of the offense in 2015, looking to utilize bigger wide receivers in the middle of the field to create mismatches and help with run blocking like Eric Decker and Quincy Enunwa. With Gailey gone, there isn’t much doubt Kerley will take on a bigger role in the offense.
With so much negativity surrounding this team, it is nice to hear that at least somebody really wants to be here.
