The Jets traded Sheldon Richardson to the Seahawks yesterday along with a seventh round pick for a second round pick, a seventh round pick, and wide receiver Jermaine Kearse. Does this deal make sense?
To be honest, I am very surprised the Jets were able to procure a second round pick for Richardson. There were plenty of hurdles in their way, including his upcoming free agency and his $8 million pricetag. The Jets were able to alleviate some of Seattle’s financial concerns by taking back Jermaine Kearse’s contract. (Even though Kearse is a throw in, he actually might be the team’s best receiver.)
I think this one is pretty simple. Richardson didn’t have much of a future with this team. Some of it was the coaching staff’s fault for not using him properly. Some of it was his fault. Some of the issues were on the field. Some were off the field.
Ultimately, the Jets are a team in rebuilding mode in need of additional Draft capital. Given the team’s current roster construction, paying him the amount of money he is going to want on a second contract didn’t make a lot of sense. He may do very well in Seattle, but I think the second round pick could help the team more if used properly.
When you can get a second round pick for a guy coming off a 1.5 sack season, I think it’s tough to argue with the move.
Do you approve?
