Jets 2017 Roster Breakdown: Josh McCown Comes One Step Closer in His Quest to Play With Every NFL Team

NFL: New York Jets-Training Camp Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

We are at the point of our Jets roster countdown where it is time to look at Josh McCown.

Name: Josh McCown

Number: 15

Year with Jets: 1st

Projected Role: Competing for starting quarterback job

His 2016: McCown returned to the Cleveland Browns for a second season. He lost the starting job to Robert Griffin III but stepped into the lineup quickly after Griffin suffered an early season injury. McCown’s time in the starting lineup was short-lived itself as he suffered an injury in his first start. He ended up starting 3 games, completing only 54.5 percent of his passes with 6 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. McCown was released by the Browns after the season. The Jets came calling, and the rest is history.

2017 will be a success if: McCown somehow finds a way to channel the 8 games he played in 2013 with the Bears. In a career that dates back to 2002, that was the only extended stretch that he has played well. At 38 years old, there isn’t any hope for development. McCown needs to play well now. Of course, with that Bears team McCown had Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennett, and a four years younger version of Matt Forte.

Odds of making the roster: Lock (>99%)
