Jets 2017 Roster Breakdown: How Much Better Will Lachlan Edwards Be in Year Two?

NFL: New York Jets at Arizona Cardinals Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The preseason is nearing its end, and so is our Jets roster countdown. Let’s take a look at Lachlan Edwards.

Name: Lachlan Edwards

Number: 4

Year with Jets: 2nd

Projected Role: Punter

His 2016: The Jets drafted Edwards in the seventh round of the 2016 Draft. It was obvious the Jets were going to take a punter then because at the time there were none on the roster. He apparently won the job at OTA’s because his competition was cut just prior to the start of training camp to make room for the re-signed Ryan Fitzpatrick. Edwards did not do much to justify the Jets’ faith in him as the team finished 29th in net yardage.

2017 will be a success if: Edwards develops into an above average punter. It is certainly possible. He wouldn’t be the first punter to struggle as a rookie only to figure it out later. It was a bit surprising to see the Jets bring in no competition for him. Even teams with established punters are frequently willing to allocate one of their ninety training camp spots to a token competitor. There is still a chance the Jets could make a move for a new punter after teams make their cuts this weekend.

Odds of making the roster: Probable (75-90%)
