Jets 2017 Roster Breakdown: Can Matt Forte Produce in a Reduced Role?

NFL: Miami Dolphins at New York Jets Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s take a look at Matt Forte as our Jets roster countdown moves forward.

Name: Matt Forte

Number: 22

Year with Jets: 2nd

Projected Role: Second running back

His 2016: The Jets signed Forte after the veteran back’s stellar career with the Bears ended. At 30 years old, it felt like it might have been the time to cut back on his workload. The Jets disagreed and had Forte as their full-time back. They probably would have been better served by cutting his workload. Forte averaged only 3.7 yards per carry. Amazingly, the Jets did not utilize one of the best pass catching backs of his generation as a receiver as Forte posted a career low 30 catches. Forte revealed late in the season that he was playing through a knee injury that caused him to miss the closing stretch of the year.

2017 will be a success if: Forte reinvents himself as quality third down back and does well when Bilal Powell needs a rest. There still are some skills he can bring to the table. He also is a candidate to be a surprise cut. It wouldn’t save the Jets money, but it wouldn’t cost money either in the long run. Over a two year stretch, the numbers even out, and they could give the roster spot to a younger player who might have a future with the team.

Odds of making the roster: Probable (75-99%)
