Jets 2017 Roster Breakdown: Last Call for Dexter McDougle

NFL: Preseason-Philadelphia Eagles at New York Jets Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Our Jets roster countdown now takes a look at Dexter McDougle.

Name: Dexter McDougle

Number: 23

Year with Jets: 4th

Projected Role: Competing for depth cornerback spot

His 2016: McDougle failed to make the roster out of training camp. After being unclaimed on waivers, he signed with the Jets practice squad. The team brought him back to the active roster in November. McDougle was active for only 6 games and participated in just 6 snaps at cornerback.

2017 will be a success if: McDougle develops into a quality starting cornerback. It is now or never for McDougle. The Jets burned a third round pick on him in 2014, and he hasn’t even been on the field for 60 snaps. When the Jets waived him after training camp, the other 31 teams had a chance to claim him. Despite carrying an extremely cheap contract, nobody was interested. All signs point to McDougle being yet another unsuccessful member of the Draft class of 2014. To get a second contract, something needs to change fast.

Odds of making the roster: Unlikely (25-50%)
