Apparently the arrival of Armagedon has driven the Jets to indulge in a Hennessy.
The New York Jets have traded safety Ron Martin to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for long snapper Thomas Hennessy. I’m not one to be doubting Thomas, but it’s a bit unusual to trade for a long snapper with zero NFL experience.
Reports out of camp suggest long time Jets long snapper Tanner Purdum has been having a rough go of things this year, which may have prompted this trade. In any event Hennessy is a local guy who attended Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey NJ in high school. Hennessy, a 23 year old, 6’ 2”, 246 pound long snapper, played his college ball at Duke University, where he contributed to the success of Jets’ kicker Ross Martin. If you’re into tea leaf reading maybe this trade suggests Martin will be the Jets’ kicker in 2017, though that would already seem probable given his better performance than Chandler Catanzaro to date. The Colts website claims Kohls rated Hennessy the 9th best long snapper in the country (do they really rate long snappers?)
This may spell the end for 31 year old Jets long snapper Tanner Purdum. If it is, the last remaining link to the 2009-2010 AFC Championship Game Jets teams will quietly pass into history.
