Jets head coach Todd Bowles indicated he will announce the team’s Week 1 starting quarterback next Monday after the third preseason game against the Giants.

Maybe something dramatic happens, but the whole thing seems anticlimactic to me at this point. I think it would be a major surprise if anybody other than Josh McCown ultimately starts for this team in the opener.

It isn’t clear whether Bryce Petty has ever really been in the competition. He has seemed like the third quarterback from the outset. If the Jets really had belief that he could be a quality starter at this point in time, it is difficult for me to think of a reason they would have signed McCown in the first place.

Meanwhile the team has given Hackenberg a long look in the preseason. He has played essentially a full game worth of action in the opening two preseason contests. The results haven’t been pretty. He has averaged under 5 yards per passing attempt and led the Jets to zero points in the 2017 preseason.
