Our Jets roster countdown moves on to take a look at second round pick Marcus Maye.
Name: Marcus Maye
Number: 26
Year with Jets: 1st
Projected Role: Starting safety
His 2016: Maye posted 50 tackles with 6 passes defensed, a sack, and an interception for Florida. Injuries limited him to 9 games. The Jets picked him in the second round of the NFL Draft, a striking selection since the team had selected a player at the same position in the first round.
2017 will be a success if: Maye looks like he belongs in the NFL. My expectations of Maye are lower than those for Jamal Adams. Adams has an NFL ready game. That is why he went in the top ten. Maye’s game needs more work. I have high hopes for him down the line, but part of the reason he went in the second round are the areas he needs to work things out. One thing in his favor for a quick adjustment is that he is an old rookie at 24. Still, the Jets are going to ask him to do a lot of different things. There will likely be hiccups. They just can’t be too frequent. Down the line, the Jets hope this is the first step to developing the NFL’s next great safety tandem.
Odds of making the roster: Lock (>99%)
