Jets safety Doug Middleton suffered a torn pec in Saturday’s preseason with over the Tennessee Titans according to the Daily News.
Middleton is dealing with a torn pec, according to a source. He’s expected to undergo surgery after he receives a second opinion.
Entering the preseason opener, Middleton was playing with the second-team defense as a backup safety alongside Rontez Miles.
Middleton was competing for a backup safety job.
In terms of impact to the Jets, it probably won’t make a huge difference. Middleton only played 41 snaps in 2016, and he wasn’t projected to have a starting role this year. The Jets drafted safeties in the first and second round of the NFL Draft. It still is a tough break for Middleton as he looks to make a career for himself in the NFL.
With Middleton presumably out for a while, it is an opportunity for other young safeties to earn a roster spot.
