Day one is in the books and Jets QB watch is in full flow.
Players were not wearing pads today, but there was plenty of work being done, and after day one, Josh McCown is winning the rep battle.
McCown received 22 reps compared to 14 for Hackenberg and 12 for Petty. Both Petty and McCown threw interceptions, with Hackenberg impressing during 7v7 drills.
It’s important to remember that this is day one, and it’s not uncommon for the veteran to receive the early snaps in a training camp battle. You’d hope that they would even out as time goes by and I’m sure we’ll see more of Hackberg and Petty over the next few days.
Jets coach Todd Bowles confirmed afterwards that he had no timetable on selecting a starter, although you have to imagine that any head coach would want to know who his starting QB will be heading into the 3rd pre-season game.
Saying that, Bowles hinted that the competition will “sort itself out” and as soon as it does, he’ll let everyone know. The ball is really in the court of all three players, and it genuinely does feel like an open competition. The guy who rises to the top will play. You can’t tell anything from day one, but it sounds as though if you had to select a QB winner based on the day, it would be Hackenberg.
We’ll be over analyzing absolutely every throw this summer, so we’re fully expecting some shifts in momentum, but Jets football is back, which means the QB competition is in full swing.
