Our Jets roster countdown now takes a look at Buster Skrine.
Name: Buster Skrine
Year with Jets: 3rd
Projected Role: Second cornerback in base defense sliding to the slot in packages with three or more cornerbacks on the field
His 2016: Skrine wasn’t the biggest problem with the Jets’ suspect pass defense a year ago, but he wasn’t part of the solution either. PFF had him allowing a completion percentage of almost 70 and a passer rating of almost 95 when he was targeted.
2017 will be a success if: Skrine is a high end slot cornerback. The Jets made a fairly sizable investment in Skrine two years ago. The team saw the importance of the slot rising in the NFL, particularly given the success the Patriots have had in their division utilizing slot targets. Skrine’s Jets career got off to a fast start with quality early season play in 2015, but it has been downhill from there. It is plausible Skrine could be a surprise camp cut to save money if some of the young corners in camp show progress.
Odds of making the roster: Probable (75-99%)
