Our Jets roster countdown takes a look at Julian Stanford.
Name: Julian Stanford
Number: 51
Year with Jets: 3rd
Projected Role: Competing for a backup inside linebacker and special teams spot
His 2016: Stanford had a strong preseason to make the team out of training camp. His cause might have been helped by a preseason injury David Harris suffered. Harris was ready by Week 1, but it is possible the Jets wanted to have an extra linebacker around for insurance. Stanford saw a handful of snaps in early season games. He was briefly cut to the practice squad, but a number of losses at linebacker around the halfway point of the year led to Stanford’s return, where he took on a starting role. He also was a regular special teamer in the games where he dressed. An ankle injury led to him ending the season on injured reserve.
2017 will be a success if: Stanford makes the team as a backup and provides the team with special teams value. After five years in the league, the ship has probably sailed on him becoming a quality starter. Perhaps he can be a good depth piece, though.
Odds of making the roster: 50/50
