Our Jets roster countdown turns its attention to Lorenzo Mauldin.
Name: Lorenzo Mauldin
Year with Jets: 3rd
Projected Role: Competing for starting outside linebacker job; possible situational pass rusher
His 2016: In a year of disappointments for the Jets, Mauldin fell under the radar a bit. His failure to turn into a three down player had big implications for the defense, though. Mauldin exceeded low expectations as a role player during his rookie season. The Jets weren’t just hoping he could develop into a starting level player. They were counting on him becoming a viable edge rusher. On a team without anything proven at outside linebacker, Mauldin was expected to take a prominent role. Instead a quiet training camp and preseason had him out of a starting job by the time Week 1 came. Mauldin was a nonfactor, registering only 16 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
2017 will be a success if: Mauldin actually develops into that quality three down player this season. The Jets once again don’t have much in the way of proven players on the edge. He has another opportunity this year to show he is capable of handling a big NFL role. Of course, he also has to deal with accusations stemming from an alleged off field incident.
Odds of making the roster: Probable (75-99%)
