Our countdown of the 2017 Jets roster now turns its attention to Demario Davis.
Name: Demario Davis
Year with Jets: 5th
Projected Role: Starting MIKE linebacker
His 2016: Davis signed with the Browns as a free agent. He didn’t seem to have a home with the Jets. New York had phased him out of the defense during the 2015 season. In Cleveland, Davis started 15 games and registered 99 tackles. Then a surprising trade returned him to the Jets.
2017 will be a success if: Davis turns into the quality three down linebacker the Jets were hoping he would become when they drafted him in 2012. His failure to do so was probably the reason the team let him go to Cleveland in the first place. The Jets did a number of things this offseason that I had a tough time wrapping my head around. This was certainly one of them. The day Calvin Pryor was traded for Davis, I saw somebody on social media mention a Pryor for Davis trade. I figured it was just a suggestion. I thought, “What a silly idea. That would make no sense for the Jets.” Then a few minutes later I realized the Jets had actually made the deal. Davis showed in 2015 he didn’t have the skills to succeed in this defensive system. Now he returns in a bigger role, replacing David Harris. Maybe the Jets know something nobody else does.
