Jets 2017 Roster Breakdown: Spencer Paysinger Tries to Stick as a Backup

New, comments
NFL: New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Our Jets roster countdown moves to Spencer Paysinger.

Name: Spencer Paysinger

Number: 58

Year with Jets: 1st

Projected Role: Competing for a backup inside linbacker/special teams roster spot

His 2016: Paysinger was a depth linebacker with the Dolphins. He started three games and registered 58 tackles. The Jets then added the veteran linebacker as a relatively late addition in free agency. He also got some work on special teams, registering 5 tackles.

2017 will be a success if: Paysinger claims a starting job and plays effectively. That is at odds with his projected role. He doesn’t figure to be in the mix to start. That tells the story of the signing. The Jets didn’t spend a whole lot of money on him, but I found it to be an odd move. Paysinger is a 29 year old depth player. It isn’t that a player like this has no value anywhere, but a player like this doesn’t have a ton of value for a team like the Jets. The Jets are starting from square one. That means their backup spots on the roster would best be utilized trying to develop somebody with upside. It might be best if Paysinger does not make the team.

Odds of making the roster: 50/50
