Todd Bowles: There Is No Frontrunner to Start at Quarterback for the Jets

NFL: New York Jets-Minicamp Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he doesn’t have a frontrunner at this point in the competition to start at quarterback for the Jets.

On if he looks at Josh McCown as the front-runner for the starting job…

Not at this time, I don’t look at anybody as the front-runner. I just wait until training camp comes and we’ll sort it out then.

The Jets had previously said there will be an open competition at the quarterback position. At this point, they seem to be sticking to it.

McCown is not exactly an inspiring option. My guess is for the Jets to have much of a fighting chance in 2017 either Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty is going to need to show enough improvement to earn the job. With that said, I can’t agree with anybody saying the Jets should give a young guy the job if they are slightly behind McCown. If they aren’t better than McCown, there is no reason for them to start. Frankly, if they can’t beat out an option like McCown, their NFL futures probably aren’t that bright.
