Jets 2017 Roster Breakdown: Can Austin Seferian-Jenkins Take Advantage of a Second Chance?

NFL: New York Jets at San Francisco 49ers Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Our Jets roster countdown for 2017 moves on to tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

Name: Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Number: 88

Year with Jets: 2nd

Projected Role: Likely starting tight end

His 2016: It was a turbulent season for the University of Washington product. A September DUI arrest led to the Buccaneers waiving him. The Jets claimed him off waivers. Seferian-Jenkins only registered 10 catches in 7 games with the Jets, however.

2017 will be a success if: Seferian-Jenkins grows into a quality starting NFL tight end. He is at a crossroads in his career. While he possesses plenty of talent, ASJ has yet to put it together. In his fourth season, the final year of his rookie contract, it is likely now or never. Seferian-Jenkins has reportedly dropped quite a bit of weight in the offseason. You frequently hear about a struggling player entering training camp “in the best shape of his career.” It frequently does not translate to improved play so it is smart to hold a healthy skepticism until you see results on the field. With that said, Seferian-Jenkins is a bit of a unique case. He has attributed his weight loss to a new outlook and lifestyle from the life changing moment he experienced last year. Perhaps he is about to flip the switch. This is a solid opportunity as the Jets are one of the few teams in the league where an unestablished yet talented player like him could expect a lot of snaps.

Odds of making the roster: Probable (75-99%)
