Mayock has a fine reputation within draft circles, and last night he held a conference call that lasted over an hour. Over 60 minutes of non-stop draft chatter. During the course of the call he referenced the Jets and the QB position, something we've been talking about for years now.
The big question is, will the Jets take a QB at number 6?
"I think most of this quarterback class should be later down the line, whether it's first round or second round. However, I think the only wild card before (the Browns) is the Jets at No. 6," Mayock said. "I don't think Buffalo's going to take one at No. 10, (though) they might. The Jets at No. 6 I think is a huge reach for any quarterback in this class. But if they fall in love with somebody, they've got to keep swinging."
This mirrors what I said last month. I firmly believe that there are no QB prospects worth a top 10 selection in this draft. However, due to the importance of the position...if the Jets really do fall in love with one of these guys, they have to prioritise the position. It's very hard to win in the NFL without a QB, and right now it doesn't look as though the Jets have a QB.
I know some will say that we can't take a QB because taking one early would admit that the team made a mistake drafting Christian Hackenberg in the 2nd round last year. There is some truth to that, but at the end of the day...Only a bad team would let a past mistake dictate future ones, and I'm tired of being a bad team.
Last week I released by 2017 NFL Draft QB power rankings with Pat Mahomes coming out on top. I see Mahomes, Trubisky and Watson as late first round talents. Kizer as a huge question mark and Peterman as probably the most pro-ready QB there. If we don't decide to go QB in the first or second round, I really would like the Jets to take a look at Northern Colorado QB Kyle Sloter, who I featured a couple of days ago, and you can read that HERE.
