Adam Schefter reports the Jets are re-signing Josh Martin.
OLB Josh Martin is re-signing w/ the NY Jets for 2 years $4.3M, per source.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 10, 2017
The details are always important. Sometimes the structure of these contracts is not what it seems.
That said, would it be fair to guess the Jets see Martin as a part of their defense going forward? Martin’s main role to this point has been special teams. I’m not here to diminish the value of special teams, but a team with as many holes as the Jets can’t be dedicating $2 million plus just for a special teamer. In a league with a salary cap, you’ve got to be able to find valuable special teamers from the scrap heap, just as the Jets did with Martin.
I’m not saying this is a bad move. Maybe the Jets think he has a role on defense. Maybe the structure is friendlier than it looks on paper. This move raises more questions for me than it answers, though.
