Ian Rapoport says the Rams are looking to trade cornerback Trumaine Johnson.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Rams are in discussions with several clubs about potentially trading away their top cover man, per teams involved in the talks.
Johnson was slated to become a free agent, but the Rams put the franchise tag on him to retain his services for the time being.
Prior to the tag, the Jets were considered a logical destination for Johnson in free agency. The team has a big need at cornerback. It is a very important position in the defense the Jets run. They also just hired Johnson’s position coach with the Rams, Dennard Wilson, to run their secondary.
While I think Johnson would have made a lot of sense in free agency, I’m less sold on the idea a trade is a good idea. Johnson might have ended up overpaid in free agency, but he plays an important position. It’s one thing to give a player a big contract. It’s another for a rebuilding team to give up Draft picks AND then a big contract for a player who isn’t a superstar.
