Report: Jets Sign Josh McCown

Scott R. Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

According to Josh McCown's agent the New York Jets have signed 37 year old free agent quarterback Josh McCown to a one year deal.  Terms have not yet been disclosed.

McCown, a 6' 4", 212 pound quarterback last employed by the Cleveland Browns, was originally a third round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2002.  McCown has bounced around the league a lot in his career, having played for the Arizona Cardinals, the Detroit Lions, the Oakland Raiders, the Carolina Panthers, the Chicago Bears, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns in prior stints. The Jets will be McCown's eighth NFL team.

Josh McCown has never started more than 13 games in any season, and he has only started more than half a team's games three times in his career. In all McCown has started 60 NFL games and posted an 18-42 record in those starts. The only season in his long career in which McCown has posted a winning record as a starter was in 2013 with the Chicago Bears, where he went 3-2. McCown has never played in the post-season.

As you can see from the following chart Josh McCown's career statistics are remarkably similar to the 2014 version of Geno Smith:

With this signing the Jets have probably found their starter at quarterback for the 2017 season, unless one of the young quarterbacks on the roster improves dramatically enough to beat McCown out for the gig.  The fact that McCown in all likelihood would not start for any other NFL team in 2017 suggests the Jets could be in for a difficult season this year.
